There are many molecular diagnostic techniques, out of which RFLP or restriction fragment length polymorphism remains an important one. The description of the technique can be found as below:
RFLP is a high throughput screening methodology which is used to identify the similarities and differences among the genetic make of individuals. According to this technique, the whole genome of the two individuals is digested with the same set of restriction enzymes and allowed to resolve on agarose gel. This makes appearance of a pattern of bands in the gel which are compared to a standard sample and the differences among the two patterns are accounted for the changes in the genetic make up between the individuals. Thus, it can be used for identification of very minute differences in the genetic make up of the individuals.
