Describe the experiment by Hofman, Van Riswick, and Van Opsal (1998). What is an HRTF, i.e., how is it measured? Describe the changes in performance that occur with experience listening with ear molds. How do the data of Hoffman, van Riswick, and van Opsal demonstrate an individual can possess multiple simultaneous pinna transform functions (that relate pinna filtering to elevation)?

Expert Solution

The experiment conducted by HOfman, Van RIswick, Van Opsal in year 1998 was done in such a way that and published in journal of NAture

As the inner part of ear is not organized spatially, localization of sound reiles on the neural processing of implicit acoustic cues. To find a sound position, the brain should learn and caliberate the cues, through correct spatial feedback from other sensorimotor system. Evidences of experiment for such a system was shown in a barn owl.

The experiment done by three scientist prove the existence for a system of ongoing spatial calibration in human adult. The spectral elevation cues of human was ruined by amending their pinna also called as pinna with molds. It was proved in experiment that sound elevation was dramatically degraded very fast after the modification , correct performance was acquired steadily.

This experiment in gave the idea that learning of novel spectral cues did not interfere with original cues that is original and that could localize sound both with normal and modified process.
