Detailing of a structure is the most important parameter in the construction of the project as the complete erection and execution of the project depends on the detailing of the reinforcement.

The most important parameters to consider while detailing the structural components is as follows (Do’s):

1. Always prepare bar bending schedule during detailing of the drawings

2. Drawings have to be prepared with due precision and accuracy.

3. Proper spacing between bars has to be provided and the spacing dimensions have to be marked with precision.

4. Each bar should be labeled properly and the shape of each member should be elaborately presented in the detail.

5. The most important feature in the structural components safeguarding the reinforcement from the atmospheric factors and this can be done by providing cover. Therefore, the cover has to be accurately specified.

6. The openings of the holes should be specified and adequate details of opening should be provided in the detailing.

7. The structure involves lot of joints in it like expansion, construction and contraction joins which play different roles in the structural stability and they should be given significant place in the detailing.

8. In the congested spaces the reinforcement provided should be elaborately explained by drawing the cross section along with longitudinal section therefore reducing the confusion in execution.

9. Proper reference points have to be given for all the structural members so that every component is provided with unique identity and its identification becomes easy for the workers.

10. Different colors if accessible should be used for different diameter of the bars so as to reduce the confusion while casting the concrete.

11. Sunken slabs should be specified with more effort so as to avoid confusion with flat slabs.

1. The detailing should not be hand drawn which may increase the chances of human errors.

2. Improper dimensioning of the lapping lengths should be avoided else, may lead to error in lapping lengths harming the safety parameters.

3. Mix up of welding sections with lapping ones should be avoided.

4. Use of local referenced should be avoided only standard references should be used for detailing.

5. Small scales for drawing should be avoided and a optimum scale such that every component is easily visible should be used.

6. Same scale reinforcement at corners and bends should be avoided and magnified scale at corners should be provided as the reinforcement percentage is high at corners and bends.

7. Single drawing for all the components should avoided and all the components should have their own detailed representation so as to reduce the confusion when complex frames are erected.
