Explain California’s renewable goal and the main issues in achieving it.
In present world, use of fossil fuels are harmful for present and future generations. Various resources which are available presently are depleting day by day and next generation may feel shortage of resources like oil, carbon. So many countries are taking initiative to use renewable sources of energy like sun, wind. California is one of those countries who believes that fossil fuels are not good for humanity
In 2015,the Governor of california Jerry Brown made a law which shows commitment towards renewable energy. It made it clear that by 2030 half of the electricity generation will be from renewable source like solar or tidal. It is true that if oil and gas will be utilised in the way we are using it will lead to depletion and destruction of human population. California is heading towards this programmes and now it is working more than the expectation. According to the reports, the three biggest renewable service providers - Pacific gas and electric Co., Southern california edition and San Diego gas and Co. have crossed the requirement that was 25% till 2016.
But there are some issues related with this:
1.oversupllyvof solar energy is creating la lot of strain whether economically or physically on the power system It could discourage further use of renewable energy for electricity generation.
2.As solar power depends on solar energy thus electricity production increases or decreases in different areas as the sun rises or sets. This is because california has limited ability to store power. Moreover, it is not able to balance it with other renewable sources if there is scarcity of solar power.
3.As the supply for renewable energy increases, it put pressure on wholesale prices and thus reduce the profits.
Thus there are some issues related with california meeting its target but it needs to maintain a storage bank if shortage needs to be avoided.
