the Diels -Alder reaction between Maleic Anhydride and furan ( balanced chemical equation and theoretical yield)
- 0.20 g of maleic anhydride and 2.5 of diethyl ether
- 0.20 ml of furan
Can you please write the balanced chemical equation and calculate the theortical yield
The reaction between diene (Furan) and a dienophile (Maleic anhydride) is called as Diels-Alder reaction to give a new addition product. Two double bond from furan and one double bond from maleic anhydride involved to create a new two single between a furan and maleic anhydride, and one new double bond in furan ring.
The reaction can be show as
The molecular weighs of reactant and product are show in reaction with M.W.
The quantities should be converted to moles, except diethyl ether (used as solvent in reaction)
Number of moles = weight in grams / molecular weight
Furan taken for the reaction is 0.2 mL needs to be converted to weight. Density of furan is 0.936 g/mL, by using formula
Weight/volume = density
On rearranging
weight = density X volume
on substituting the values
weight of furan = 0.936 g/mL X 0.2 mL = 0.1872 g
Number of moles of furan = weight of furan / molecular weight of furan
= 0.1872 g/ 68.07 g mol-1 = 0.00275 mol
Number of moles of maleic anhydride = weight of maleic anhydride / molecular weight of maleic anhydride.
= 0.2 g / 98.06 g mol-1 = 0.00204 mol
Here the limiting reagent is maleic anhydride as it has less number of moles compared to furan.
By seeing reaction, we can say
1 mol of maleic anhydride reacts with 1 mol of furan to give 1 mol of product.
So, we can write 0.00204 mol of maleic anhydride reacts with 0.00204 mol of furan to give 0.00204 mol of product.
Then theoretically, the number of moles of product formed is 0.00204 mol.
To get the weight in grams of product we can use weight = moles X molecular weight
Weight of product = 0.00204 mol X 166 g mol-1
= 0.338 g
Theoratical weight of product formed is 0.338 g
