Some undergraduates think tertiary institutions should focus on online learning and find ways of inculcating this in the conventional institutions such that, even at the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, students can continue to learn online. But some students disagreed with the online learning option. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons to support your opinion. Your argument should clearly identify the issue, provide credible reasons, and have a convincing conclusion.

Answer: Online learning is not a substitute to physical classroom education and training in the long term and should be used as a complementary and value-added benefit along with the conventional classroom training. For one thing, too much screen time is not good for the eyes and brain and so must be limited to a few hours per day and lessons cannot be the same as time as a regular classroom timetable. The advantages of both can be capitalised and an opportunity harnessed to create a better education system of the future which will be beneficial to all stakeholders - students, parents, teachers/academicians, and educational institutions. For starters, physical classroom schedules can be limited to alternate days of the week or just a couple of days in order to provide one-on-one interactions and practical training thereby exposing students to practical knowledge and industry trends especially when it comes to technical/engineering, computer, and science courses. The idea of physical classrooms is also good in a limited fashion and cannot be done away with altogether because it involves the physical interaction between classmates which develops social skills and healthy competition between students in physical activities and competitions. The future of education has changed and the future must involve flexibility in timings, freedom to think, creativity, etc., must be inculcated and these can be achieved through independent online learning curriculum incorporating pre-recorded notes and video lessons to ensure flexibility so students can study at their convenience and pursue part time employment opportunities if they wish to support themselves. It cannot be argued for one system against/over another without compromising on quality and without overlooking the weaknesses of one education methodology and delivery over another. They must continue and progress consecutively and complement each other in the future with a new strategy and approach post the Covid-19 pandemic.
