Unions exist in any country to protect the working place and minimise working hours ,increase wages .We saw the growth of labour unions in the united states in 1800s and 1900's because of the unsafe treatment at working places , humiliation faced at work by the labour community.trade unions existed in order to protect the national trade ,local unions existed in order to safeguard the jobs for local people .In 1794 itself we witnessed a trade union by the shoe makers in Philadelphia, america.
American labour wanted equality at work place as it was promised under at the time of its independence.when it is failed to bring the responsibility was taken over by these unions that made the industrial sector to treat all people with fixed wages and working hours .
The national labour union that was created in 1866 by the Congress managed to fix 8 hours as the working hours.all the unions that were created fetched good results to their effect .In fact in 1914 ,Congress had empathised the situation of labour unions, it allowed the labour unions to protest ,strike ,demand etc on account of their problems which gave more power to the existing unions .It mandated all the industries to fix the work hours and pay for over time and safeguard their working conditions .This involvement of Congress for the growth of labourers made the labour unions support Congress which in turn resulted in the decline of unions by 1920s.
