Do chromosomes form before or after the cell enters mitosis?
Chromosomes form after the cell enters mitosis during the prophase stage. During prophase, the chromatin (long and linear thread-like structures) inside the nucleus of the cell condense to form tight structures called as chromosomes.
How is the chromosome structured?
A chromosome is an organized structure made up of DNA and protein complex. This complex is known as chromatin and is present in the cell's nucleus. Chromatin fibers are packaged into subunits called as nucleosomes. Nucleosomes also contains DNA-bound proteins known as histones. These are the basic proteins that helps in the packaging of DNA. Chromosome contains the genetic hereditary material that stores gene, regulatory elements and nucleotide sequences.
Sister chromatids form when the chromosome replicates (during S phase) and both identical copies are held together at a common region called as centromere.
Sister chromatids contain what when compared to each other?
Sister chromatids are formed from a single replicated chromosomes. Therefore, they are exactly same and contains identical chains of dsDNA and DNA-bound proteins, i.e., histones. One sister chromatid contains the original chromosome while the other sister chromatid contains a newly copied chromosome. Both of these chromosomes are attached to each other by centromere.
What is interphase?
Interphase is also known as the resting phase or preparatory
phase. Interphase is the first abd longest satge of cell cycle
prior to mitosis (cell division) in which the cell prepares and
utilizes nutients and proteins. During this phase, the cell
duplicates its content to prepare itself for the cell division. The
replication of DNA also takes place in this phase. Interphase
consists of three phases, namely, G₁, S, and G₂ phases
What is M phase?
M phase (mitotic phase) is the phase of actual cell division in which the mother cell divides into two genetically identical daughter cells.
