Use electronic medical records will make doctors 'offices more secure, more accurate, and increase the overall quality of patient care by making medical history accessible to any health care provider who may treat them. EMRs minimize mistakes, minimize re-testing or ordering, optimize cost-effectiveness, and improve collaboration among health care providers. The federal government is taking measures to ensure that these electronic systems are sturdy, reliable, and capable of communicating among themselves. Government requirements are in effect to encourage reliability, quality of data, the honesty of the authorship, quality of the coder, and the proper use of copy features. For these reasons alone, I am in favor of the position of the government in standards on EMR.

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the first set of EMR guidelines on July 28, 2010, which are intended to ensure the systems are safe and effective. Another primary purpose is to provide the consistency of data collected by one policy with data collected by another. In this way, health care providers can share details if a patient agrees, which can help them work more effectively and improve patient care .
