QUESTION 1
Put the following steps in order of the pathway for taste:
CN IX or CN VII
gustatory cells
synapse at medulla oblongata
primary gustatory corted
synapse at thalamus
Answer:
Correct order:
1. Gustatory cells
2. CN IX or CN VII
3. Synapse at the medulla oblongata
4. Synapse at thalamus
5. Primary gustatory cortex
Explanation:
The taste pathway starts initially in the tongue. The tongue consist of taste buds, the taste buds contains taste receptor cells called gustatory cells. When the signals reaches the guatatatory cells it transfers the signals to nucleus of tractus solitarius of medulla oblongata via the glossopharyngeal nerve which supplies posterior 1/3 rd of tongue and facial nerve which supplies the anterior 2/3rd of tongue. These nerve form synapse (neuronal junction) at the medulla oblongata. And from the medulla oblongata the nerves send the signals to the ventral posteromedial nuclei of thalamus . These nerves form synapse at the thalamus and from the thalamus the signal reaches the primary gustatory cortex it is the area of brain which is for the perception of taste.
