For the exploration of determinants of health outcomes, first, by depending on descriptive epidemiology to create hypotheses about link between exposures as well as outcomes. To test perticular hypothesis, analytic studies are then accepted. Subjects samples are recognised then data about status of exposure and outcome is collected. The extract of an analytic study is a groups of subjects that are differentiated in order to measure the magnitude of association between exposures as well as outcomes.

Hypothesis: smoking enhances the heart attacks risk, in the cohort, the subjects could be fixed on the basis of their smoking habits, and one can distinguish the cohort subset that smoked to the never smoked subset. For comparison of each such that one willing to prepare the cohort could be classified according to given exposure or not, and one could estimate and contrast the heart attacks (incidence) frequency between the groups. Incidence give an evaluation of risk, therefore, if the heart attacks chance is 3 times more in smokers contrast to non-smokers, it shows an association between smoking as well as chance of heart attack.

The sign of analytical studies, is that they gather knowledge about status of exposure and outcome both, and they contrast groups to estimate whether there arise to be a link.
