What is kerma, what is the meaning of kerma ?

When is kerma happened in radiotherapy process ? is it from the process of x-ray production? and in what part the process of kerma is occured..?

What is the different between kerma electron, kerma photon and kerma neutron ?

Solutions

Expert Solution

what is kerma

Kerma is an acronym for "kinetic energy released per unit mass", defined as the sum of the initial kinetic energies of all the charged particles liberated by uncharged ionizing radiation (i.e., indirectly ionizing radiation such as photons and neutrons) in a sample of matter, divided by the mass of the sample. It is defined by the quotient .

The SI unit of kerma is the gray (Gy) (or joule per kilogram), the same as the unit of absorbed dose.

However, kerma can be different from absorbed dose, depending on the energies involved.

This is because ionization energy is not accounted for. While kerma approximately equals absorbed dose at low energies

kerma is only applied to ionising particles

is it from process of x ray production ? yes in x ray production but it is related to that ? now the queation is how as i mention that it happned for higher engegy so i x ray prodution we need high energy as dose so

in the form of bremsstrahlung (X-rays) or fast-moving electrons, and is not counted as absorbed dose

kerma is much higher than absorbed dose at higher energies, because some energy escapes from the absorbing volume.

at which part kerma is occured ?

the answer to this is there is two type of kerma one is in the medium where energy transfered to the other particles in the medium

so we can say it happen in the medium of particles or the spcae contaioning particle in x ray sytem .secondly it release engery to atomic exitation

Now difference b/w kerma electorns, photos , nuetrons ? a

as name suggeset that kerma photon kerma that mean when librated by uncharged ionized photon

nuetrons kerma is mean by when librated by uncharged ionized nuetron

for elecrtons mean by librated ioned by electrons
