Assume you are making a compisite material airplane, which has ligter weight and more fuel effciency. Describe how your airplane will put pressure on a culture outside of America (Choose a specific country). How your airplane will affect their society, culture, economic, and envornment, etc?

Expert Solution

Recently boeing is experimenting with carbon fiber and fiber glass.Consider India for analysis of the effect of the airplane.

carbon fiber is made of carbon fibers impregnated into plastic resin and baked. it has high stiffness, high tensile strength, low weight, high chemical resistance, high temperature tolerance and low thermal expansion, which makes it a good choice for construction of airplane. The one main disadvantage is high costs of manufacture, which by the way will be covered in long run in fuel saved because of the low weight.

Environment:- carbon is the most abundant material in the whole world, it can be extracted from anywhere. hence there will lesser mining sites which will reduce impact on environment. recently a company india gravyink was able to capture carbon from air pollution and manufacture ink from it. If the same procedure is applied in extracting carbon from the air for carbon fiber, the same carbon soot in the air reduces improving air quality.

It can also have adverse impact if the extra or unused carbon fiber is dumped into open sites rather than being recycled. Since it is not bio degradable it can cause death to animals when consumed. And also plastic resin is used, recenlty it is dicovered that plastics tend to release microplastics which can not be filtered even by water purifiers. this will cause huge impact on human health.

economic:-

manufacture process for the carbon fiber is very high compared to aluminium generally used. But the pros of the material beats the cons here. for a certain same weight carbon fiber has 2.5 to 3 times more strength than aluminium. this can lead to reduce fuel costs and building bigger planes. which will catch up with extra cost spent for manufacture

culture and society:-As per culture, as long the carbon is not extracted from certain animals like cow, generally it doesnot have any effect. Any failures in structures that leads human life initially can draw opposition from people to continue the use of old material aluminium.

The world has a finite amount of the fossil fuel Fuel-o, for which there is no substitute. We know we only need Fuel-o for 2 periods, since a cost-effective renewable substitute will be available after that. The global inverse demand for Fuel-o in each period (1 and 2) is described by: P = 9 – 0.3q, where P is the unit price of Fuel-o and q is the quantity extracted in the current period. The marginal cost of each unit...

Please discuss. Let’s assume that the Chief Engineer has asked you to recommend a material for the design of a critical load-bearing structural element. It is critical since if it fails it can have a catastrophic impact on the performance of the system. For example, if a turbine blade fails in a jet engine, it can destroy it. The Chief has given you a choice between a low density, high stiffness but brittle ceramic material or more ductile, higher density,...

Biodiesel fuel has a cloud point, the temperature at which the fuel becomes cloudy, of approximately 13 0C . This clouding can lead to poor engine performance and can even cause an engine to stop completely. An industrial chemical company produces an additive designed to lower the cloud point of this type of fuel. A random sample of six different biodiesel fuels was obtained and the cloud point was measured for each. One gram of the chemical additive was mixed...
