A researcher is trying to determine the relationship between heights and weights of individuals. Which of the following statistical tools would be most appropriate to aid in this study?

none of the other answers are correct

a box plot

the least-squares regression line

a joint frequency table

a pie chart

Solutions

Expert Solution

lets first analyze that what each of the statistical quantity represent to reach to a decision:

1.BOX-PLOT:

A box plot (also known as box and whisker plot) is a type of chart often used in explanatory data analysis to visually show the distribution of numerical data and skewness through displaying the data quartiles (or percentiles) and averages.

2.LEAST-SQUARE REGRESSION LINE:

A least-squares regression method is a form of regression analysis which establishes the relationship between the dependent and independent variable along with a linear line. This line is referred to as the “line of best fit”.

3.JOINT FREQUENCY TABLE:

Joint frequency table shows the frequencies for data that has two categories. Joint frequency. is found by reading from the inner cells of a two-way frequency table. Marginal frequencies. are found on the outside edges of the table. Relative frequency table. shows each frequency as a proportion of the whole data sample size.

4.PIE-CHART:

A pie chart (or a circle chart) is a circular statistical graphic, which is divided into slices to illustrate numerical proportion. In a pie chart, the arc length of each slice (and consequently its central angle and area), is proportional to the quantity it represents.

Since from above we observe that LEAST-SQUARE REGRESSION LINE helps to determine relationship between two variables(one dependent and other as independent).

So, if a researcher is trying to determine the relationship between heights and weights of individuals he/she should use LEAST-SQUARE REGRESSION LINE taking any of them(height or weight) as dependent and other as independent and the line of fit will give the linear relationship between height and weight.
