Describe how the water potential in the gas phase of the air surrounding a plant influences xylem transport. What is the primary means by which a plant can control this interaction?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Transpiration is the loss of water from the plant through evaporation at the leaf surface. It is the main driver of water movement in the xylem. Transpiration is caused by the evaporation of water at the leaf, or atmosphere interface; it creates negative pressure (tension) equivalent to –2 MPa at the leaf surface. However, this value varies greatly depending on the vapor pressure deficit, which can be insignificant at high relative humidity (RH) and substantial at low RH. Water from the roots is pulled up by this tension. So if the water potential in air is higher ,the rate of transpiration is lowered down and so the transport of water through xylem also minimises.

However, this value varies greatly depending on the vapor pressure deficit, which can be insignificant at high relative humidity (RH) and substantial at low RH. Water from the roots is pulled up by this tension. At night, when stomata close and transpiration stops, the water is held in the stem and leaf by the cohesion of water molecules to each other as well as the adhesion of water to the cell walls of the xylem vessels and tracheids.

In a gas turbine of a thermoelectric plant a regenerator is used that preheats the air before it enters the combustion chamber. You have the options of a backflow heat exchanger or a shell heat exchanger and two tube passages. The air leaves the compressor at a temperature of 350 C and the exhaust gases have a temperature of 700 C. The mass flow in both cases is 5 kg / sec. The overall transfer coefficient is 75 w /...

. In a gas turbine plant, air enters a compressor at atmospheric conditions of 15 ?C, 1.0133 bar and is compressed through a pressure ratio of 10. The air leaving the compressor passes through a heat exchanger before entering the combustion chamber. The hot gases leave the combustion chamber at 800 ?C and expand through an HP turbine which drives the compressor. On leaving the HP turbine the gases pass through a reheat combustion chamber which raises the temperature of...
