Compare the number ATP made from lactic acid fermentation to that of cellular respiration. Explain how muscles cells recover from lactic acid. Explain the importance of β-oxidation and weight loss. Give the number of ATP made from the breakdown of a 12C fatty acid to that of one molecule of glucose.
Please, i would appreciate an answer in a text form not handwritten. thank you
Lactic acid fermentation produces only 2 ATP molecules per 1 glucose molecule.
Aerobic respiration of one glucose molecule produces 36 ATP molecules.
Under strenuous exercise, muscle cells undergo anaerobic respiration and build up lactic acid. To recover from this, muscles must be relaxed (light exercise must be done) with proper oxygenation. When oxygen is abundant, lactate is converted back to pyruvate and enters aerobic respiration.
Fats are the major accumulating compounds in an obese person. Fats are catabolized by beta-oxidation in the mitochondria. Beta oxidation of fatty acids produces acetyl Co-A which enters TCA cycle to produce ATP.
For weight loss, following reactions must occur in the body.
i. Lipolysis of triglycerides
ii. Mobilization of fatty acids to mitochondria
iii. Beta oxidation
