In: Operations Management
For this activity, prepare a presentation to solicit support for the establishment of an airport. You will research and select the location for your airport. You may choose any location (national or international) that you wish as well as any type of airport. Your presentation must include: The airport location The airport type Funding/revenue sources for airport construction and operation Steps involved during its design, development, and construction Environmental considerations.
To answer this question, we may describe each factors mentioned above while constructing an airport :
SLIDE 1 :
JEWAR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, NOIDA
LOCATION ADVANTAGE AND TYPE :
While selecting the location for any airport, the following factors have to be considered :
* The location should have suffieciently large area of flat land to accomodate runways and other facilities , and also the area should be much away from the residential area and away from the obstructions such as mountains and tall buildings.
* The location of the airport should be easily accessible to all the users.
* The airport's location and it's construction should not interfere and deteriorate the natural beauty or other significance.
* The operational capability of the site is accessed in accordance to the weather conditions such as snow, ice, fog and low visibility during landling and take offs i.e the airport navigation operations.
* The land used should be flat and slight undulating for the aircrafts operation.
The above mentioned airport, meets all the location expectations.
Type : The airport would be an international airport where both the domestic and as well as international airlines can easily operate.
SLIDE 2: Funding/revenue sources for airport construction and operation
Construction of an airport requires a huge funding. These fundings are provided from the various sources :
1. The Airport Improvement Programme ( AIP) is responsible to provide grants to public agencies for the planning and development of the public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems ( NPIAS)
2. funding from the state government for aviation as a part of their transportation program.
3. local funding is also provided through a general fund allocation and other local sources which are available.
In the case of Jewar Airport, majority of the funding for construction is from the Yogi Adittyanath's govt of rs 2,000 crore. The fund was alloted by the State govt in Uttar Pradesh budget 2020.
Revenue sources of Airports :
* Over half of the airport's revenue comes from the passenger fees included in your ticket price, while the other for approx 40 percent is generated from non-aeronautical activities such as retail concessions, car parkings, advertising and more.
* Some other revenue sources includes special product areas such as duty free, souvenir shops, book stores, travel services, foods and beverages section etc.
SLIDE 3 : Steps involved during its design, development, and construction
While constructing an airport, it's planning and development includes the following :
* Terminal planning is the only point included in the planning activity. While planning and designing a terminal, following points are considered
a. The walking distance should be minimun.
b. It should be according to the performance standards.
c. Specified areas alloted for the retailers
d. Areas for facility points such as ATM's, restrooms etc.
e. Expandibility for future growth.
f. areas and processing time for check in, customs etc.
Airport Development and construction :
It includes the land development for terminals and base, the infrastructure for the ancillary facilities. All the construction is done as per standards maintained by ICOA.
SLIDE 4: Environmental considerations
The following enviromental considerations are followed while any airport is constructed :
1. The location selected for it's construction should not pose any harm to the beauty of the place i.e trees plants etc.
2. The noise pollution should be under permitted levels and should not affect the peace of the residents hence, it is constructed much away from the main city.
3. The amount of Green house gases emission should be under permitted levels.
4. Authorities are assigned to keep a check that enviromental concerns are addressed and the airports follow them as per the rules.
Every airport is designed keeping all of the above factors in the given slides in mind.
Hope this helps.
