5. What are the major components of viruses? Describe the replication cycle of a lytic bacteriophage.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1.The major components of viruses are nucleic acid which us composed of RNA or DNA and caspid ( protein coat ) which acts as a sheild to protect the viral genome from infections.

The result of the replication cycle of lytic bacteriophage is the distruction of the cell along with it's membrane. The process of replication cycle of lytic bacteriophage begins with the recognition and attachment of the bacteriophage and probe. Then after this, the phage nucleic acid is injected to the genome. After the injection, then occurs the biosynthesis of phage proteins and genome. It is the most important part of the cycle where the synthesis takes place. Then the phage components are assembled and regulated properly for the functioning. The final process of the replication cycle of the bacteriophage occurs the bacterial lysis. The stages described above are

  • Attachment
  • Penetration
  • Biosynthesis
  • Maturation
  • Lysis
