outline the lytic and lysogenic cycle of a bacteriophage
Lytic cycle - Initially the bacteriophase secrets lysozyme enzyme which digests the cell wall of bacteria and thus the virus enters into bacterial cell. Here it controls then complete systems(All activity) of the cell and starts producing nuclease enzymes by transcription and translation. This nuclease enzyme breaks the DNA of host cell in small fragments and thus the virus starts producing its own proteins and replicates its DNA using DNA fragments of bacteria. After some time the number of virus increase in cell and now these virus digest the cell wall with the help of their tail and infect the other cells. This is called transduction.
Lysogenic cycle - In this cycle initial process is same as lytic cycle. When the virus enters the host , the DNA of virus binds with the DNA of bacteria because of presence of inhibitor proteins. The bacteria replicates its DNA by simple replication and thus the DNA of virus automatically replicates. When this inhibitor protein gets inactive ,the DNA of virus separates from Bacterial DNA and completes lytic cycle.
