1. Explain why bleeding time test are not performed as frequently as PT and PTT test.
2. Describe other test of platelet function.
3. List the requirements for coagulations specimen collection and potential sources of error for the various tests.
Answer 1:
Bleeding time test is used for assessment of patients' platelets function that is coagulation. In this test, an incision is made on the forearm on area where there is no hair or any veins. This incision is of standard width and depth and done with an automatic device. Subsequently, it bleeds. When it stops bleeding it is the indication of a platelet plug, the bleeding time is noted.
This test is performed when less invasive and more reliable tests like PT (Prothrombin Time) and PTT (Partial Thromboplastin time) are not available. However, it is reliable in case of an assessment of clinical bleeding in uremia patients. When the skin is invaded, there are chances of excessive bleeding which may lead to infection.
PT and PTT are generally used for the evaluation of coagulation disorders. PT determines the extrinsic system integrity and factors present in both extrinsic and intrinsic systems. PTT determines intrinsic system integrity and its common factors.
