It shall be noted that television is the most popular media in Syria and hence, the broadcaster for television known as General Organization of Radio and Television Syria (ORTAS) is the main broadcaster that provides program channels in languages such as English, French and Arabic.
In current situation, Syria does not have access to Western channels.
Syria however has the presence of other media such as radio, internet, film and print media but they are not as popular as television.
The program channels broadcasted in Syria are: Addounia TV, Cham TV, Sama TV, Syria TV and Talaqie TV
The print media includes Al-Baath, Syria Times, Al-Watan
Press includes AL-Ghad, Brigades, Pamphlets. While Syria constitution calls for free press, one has to need a license from ministry of information. Even after lifting of emergency law in 2011, free press has not be made available. Syria is ranked 173rd out of 178 countries in terms of Press Freedom Index in Oct 2010. By 2013, 5 journalists were killed and 21 were imprisoned.
Film includes National Organization for Cinema controlled Syria film which are propaganda based.
Radio includes Syrian Arab Republic Radio and FARAH FM 97.3
Internet websites include Syrian Arab News Agency, General Authority of Development site. There is internet censorship. It is controlled by SCS and STE. They are subject to manipulations by government and authorities. Bloggers are reported and arrested and some times expelled.
