  1. (Ch 12, pg. 715). Consider the following scatter plot:

    a) Does there appear to be a strong or weakcorrelation between y and x?

    b)  Is the correlation positive or negative?

    c) Would this be classified as a linear equation, yes or no?

Solutions

Expert Solution

ANSWER::

a) Weak correlation

Since the scatter plot is really scattered, the values of (x,y) are not very close to each other, therefore this is showing a relatively weak correlation between the two variables.

b) Negative

The slope is showing a downward trend i.e. as X increases, Y decreases. So there is a negative relationship between the two variables under consideration.

c) NO

Since the correlation is weak, there will be very few points who would lie on a straight line. Even if we fit a linear equation, there would be many outliers and hence the model will not be a good fit, with high error residuals.
