Genetically modified organisms can be defined as the organism in which the genetic material has been changed in a way that does not occur naturally by mating (using genetic engineering techniques ). GMOs are the source of genetically modified food, medicines, that are widely used in scientific research and produce other goods. GMOs have wide applications in different field of biology such as, human gene therapy, transgenic plants etc. One of the objectives for developing plants based on Genetically modified organisms is to improve crop protection.
GMO's have both social and ethical issues. When Genetically modified organisms introduced into the ecosystem, the Indian Government set up an organization such as, GEAC (Genetic engineering approval committee) which will make decision of the validity of GM search. The modification of living organisms used as food, medicine which are also created problems with patents granded for the same. The use of biological resources by companies and other organizations without proper authorisation from the country known as Biopiracy. Some nations are developing laws to prevent unauthorized eexploitation of their bio resources. Developing and the underdeveloped world is rich in biodiversity related to bio-resources. The indian parliament has recently cleared the second amendment of the Indian patents Bill, that take such issues into consideration, including patent terms and research.
