How does water rise up in talk trees? Does this process depend more on increase in negative preassure as the water rises up the tree? Or rise of liquid due to capilarity?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans. Water will rise up in the plants due to the transpiration pull. The transpiration pull theory was given by the Dixon and Jolly. According to this theory, transpiration is the major driving force for the rise of water in the xylem. So this process mainly depends on the negative pressure that is created by the transpiration. And this negative pressure is responsible for the rise in water. Rise in liquid due to capillaries play a minor role in the rise of the water in this process.

The transpiration pull theory has two essential features:-

1. Cohesion of water and adhesion between xylem and water.

2. Transpiration pull.

This theory states that the transpiration pull is generated in the leaves of the plants is responsible for the upward movement of water which pulls the water column in the tracheary elements.
