BIO&160 QUESTIONS:
3. Explain how the various levels of structure of proteins (primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary) are responsible for protein's very important role as enzymes.
In your answer, use the following terms correctly - induced fit, substrate, active site.
primary structure ;The simplest level of protein structure, it is simply the sequence of aminoacids in a polypeptide chain.
secondary structure :it refers to the local folded structures that form within a polypeptide due to interaction between atoms of the backbone.
Tertiary structure : It is the overall three dimensional structure of a polypeptide is calld tertiary structure,it is due to interaction betwwen the R groups of the aminoacid that make up the protein.
Quaternary structure: many proteins are made up of a single polypeptide chain and have only the three levels of structure ,however some proteins are made up of multiple polypeptide chains also known as subunits , when these sub units come together they give the protein its quatenary structure.
Part of enzyme where substrate molecular get attached is known as active site.on attachment to the active site, the substrate is changed into the product. the active site has a residue which help in the attachment of the substrate .the substrate molecule form a temporary bond with the enzyme at the active site.bonds like hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions ,or temporary non covalent interactions are formed which leads to the formation of an enzyme substrate complex.
