How are monosaccharides, disaccharides, polysaccharides structurally different from one another?
Ans)
1) Monosachharides comprise the simplest carbohydrates, the building block molecules, and contain single sugar units. Disachharides are made of two sugar units, and polysachhrides contain several such units.
2) Monosachharides and disachharides are water soluble whereas polysachharides are insoluble in water.
3) monosachharides are reducing sugars, some disachhrarides are reducing sugars but some are not and polysaachharides are non-reducing carbohydrates.
4) Monosachharides have a single monomer, disachharides are composed of two monomers and polysaachharides rae composed of a large number of monomers.
5) Monosachharides have simple, linear, unbranched structures. Disachharides have simple, linear, unbranched or branched structures. Polysachharides have complex, branched structures.
6) Monosachharides have a single ring structure. Disachharides have two ring structure. Polysachharides have a number of ring structures.
