In case of reflux condensor, the liquid is boiled, but the vapor is allowed to condense and flow back into the original flask. Reflux condensor are straight and placed vertically above the flask.
In case of distillation, a liquid is heated until it is boiling and the vapors which are produced are condensed and collected in a separate flask. Distilation apparatus are bent type, where the vapours travel along the bending and gets collected in a separated flask.
Why would we want to use a reflux over a distillation? This part is an incomplete question.
Reflux condensor and distillation apparatus are used for completely different purposes.
