The ban was first imposed in september 2008 as when the scandal got exposed. It was imposed on suspicion of presence of MELAMINE in some milk consignments from China. MELAMINE is a toxic chemical used for making plastics and fertilisers. Oral ingestion directly affects the digestive tract and causes diarrhea, vomiting etc. It causes renal toxicity (related to kidney).
For instance and as per estimation at that time 6-8 babies died of kidney damage or renal toxicity and more than 50, 000 babies were hospitalized. The issue was concerned about food safety so it lead to a world wide ban on china's milk product and other related products.
