Homework 4

  1. If two different taxa share common ancestry with each other more recently than either one does with any other organisms, we call them _______ ______. (ITS NOT —>(Paraphyletic taxa))

Homework 5

  1. How does the mosquito transmit malaria from an ill person to a healthy person?

a. Plasmodium is taken up from one person's blood and squirted back out into the next person.

b. Plasmodium gametocytes are taken up from one person's blood and cross into the saliva duct to be reinjected into the next person.

c. Plasmodium gametocytes are taken up from one person's blood, fuse to form a zygote that becomes a motile ookinete that enters the saliva ducts.

d. Plasmodium gametocytes are taken up from one person's blood, fuse to form a zygote that becomes a motile ookinete, that crosses the stomach wall, forms an oocyst that undergoes sporogony and the sporozoites then migrate to the saliva ducts to be injected into the human host.

e. Plasmodium gametocytes are sucked from one person's blood, form an oocyst that undergoes sporogony and the sporozoites migrate across the stomach lining to the saliva ducts.

4. If two different taxa share common ancestry with each other more recently than either one does with any other organisms, we call them sister group.

A sister group means the closest relative(s) of a given unit in an evolutionary tree. Sister taxa are taxa which are derived from a common ancestral node. For a given set of taxa, a taxon can be closely related to its sister taxon (or taxa).

5 .e) Plasmodium gametocytes are sucked from one person's blood, form an oocyst that undergoes sporogony and the sporozoites migrate across the stomach lining to the saliva ducts.

Malaria is caused by the Plasmodium parasite and can be transmitted through mosquito bites. Anopheles mosquito is responsible for transmission. So, a person can get malaria only through transfusions or organ transplants.

Plasmodium falciparum can have different forms throughout their life cycle. Infective stage are sporozoites from the salivary gland of a mosquito. These sporozoites will grow and multiply to become merozoites. The merozoites enter the red blood corpuscles and formed trophozoites, schizonts and gametocytes. On the other hand i.e in the mosquito, the gametocytes undergo sexual reproduction forming a zygote. This zygote will turn into a ookinete, which again forms oocytes from which sporozoites are again formed.

The kingdom Protozoa is made up of numerous types of single-celled organisms. Because they are all unicellular the protozoans are a monophyletic group. --False

In the kingdom Protozoa only the ciliates belong to monophyletic clade whereas other classes of Protozoa are all polyphyletic groups.
