Recruiting is an important part of human resource management. You are the owner of a manufacturing business that operates in multiple countries. A position for a global marketing manager has just opened up. Many of the other managers at your company feel like this is a good opportunity for promoting someone within the company (internal hire). But you question this approach because you aren't sure if this is the best way to go because you aren’t sure if any of the existing managers are truly qualified for this position. So, you are leaning toward hiring someone from outside the company (external hire). What are the pros and cons of internal recruiting in this particular situation? What are the pros and cons of external recruiting in this situation?

It is true that Recruitment is one of the important function of Human resource management. However it can also be said that it is one of the complicated task for human resource manager to sucessfully, identify, attract and select the most competent applicant. The manager has a choice whether to recruit internally or externally and both the aspects have their own pros and cons which are stated below.

Pros and Cons of internal recruitment

Pros

  1. It is quicker, when the manager has not much time, then he may opt for internal recruitment.
  2. Current employees have knowledge about the business , so they can be better compatible for the company and may easily opt the work
  3. This Is a cheaper way of recruitment. It saves the advertisement cost and agency cost etc.

Cons

  1. This is not respected by other employees
  2. It may be possible that better skills and competencies can be recruited by external recruitment. Internal recruitment Limits the options.

Pros and Cons of External recruitment

Pros

  1. The chances of fresh skills recruitment increases.
  2. It enhance the competition and also helps in gaining competitive advantage.
  3. It is one of the fair means of recruitment. Since the competition is open and wide, there is more opportunity for candidates where they can apply for vacant positions in organization

Cons

  1. It may lead to an expensive recruitment as it requires advertisement cost , huge training cost etc.
  2. External people have limited understanding about the organization, hence it may take long to get them settle in an organization.
