For an aqueous reaction, when going from a molecular equation to a total or complete ionic equation

For an aqueous reaction, when going from a molecular equation to a total or complete ionic equation, the formula for each substance is written as separate ions in the ionic equations if the substance is ___________ ["a gas", "a solid", "aqueous", "a liquid"] AND the substance is _____________ ["either a strong or weak electrolyte", "a weak electrolyte", "a strong electrolyte", "a nonelectrolyte"]. .

Solutions

Expert Solution

1) The substance must be aqueous. Because only aqueous solutions will dissociate to form ions which are required in the reaction.

2) the substance is either a strong or weak electrolyte. Because soluble ionic substances and strong acids ionize completely and are strong electrolytes whereas weak acids and bases ionize upto a small extent and are weak electrolytes.

It cannot be a non electrolyte because they do not dissociate in water to produce ions, which are required for the ionic reaction.
