According to musicologists, Danza was the first national music of Puerto Rico. The national anthem of the place is also on Danza music and this music has been a symbol of Puerto Rico. The orgination of the music is differs from expert to expert but most of them believe it be orginate in 1840. According to Fernando Callejo its origin was in Cuba from where young people brought it to Puerto Rico with a new style of dancing in pairs on this music.

The music was orginally called Habanera and got the name of Danza in 1870. It was introduced by the pianist and composer Manuel G. Tavarez. He stayed in Ponce and worked on this music on his piano. He created his works "Magarita" and "La sensitiva". After him his successor Morel Campos composed danzas on his own ochestra used for dancing music. He composed more than 200 danzas.

Danza consists of 4 parts namely- introduction, two themes, a third theme after which the first theme is repeated. Though danza is not holding much popularity among popular dancers but is accepeted as a folklore and ballroom dance form music.
