The ACTU has embarked on a national strategy to attract a new generation of workers to unions, establishing a body to provide cutting edge training and education to officials, and sponsoring an Australian visit of renowned organiser Marshall Ganz.
ACTU secretary Sally McManus said the strategy, which includes the creation of the Australian Trade Union Institute, was designed to increase union membership, particularly among young workers who lacked awareness of organised labour.
While union membership sits at 15 percent of the workforce, and 10 per cent in the private sector, just 6 per cent of workers aged 15 to 19 belong to a union. An estimated 8 percent of employees under 25 are in unions.
Do you believe the ACTU's national strategy to attract younger generations to join the union is working? If not, why not?
ACTU has embarked on a national strategy to attract a new generation of worker union and provide better training and provide minimization in the risk of injury, harassment, bullying etc. but these do not attract the younger generation. According to ACTU union have responsibilities to organise the worker's growth and education.
For building better union strategies these tools are required such as communication, education, leadership development, occupational health and safety measures, campaigning for better work. Three strategies required to recruit new young worker in the union by teaming up with other community groups, align with a particular work profession, finding new members. But these strategies do not attract young workers to join the union and to attract young worker some new strategies required in a union like a reach to potential to reach on a social level, use technology for reporting, complaints, news etc, Publicize Workplace Incidents and Misconduct With Blogs, get electronic union authorization cards and certification. ACTU strategy to attract young worker in union not fulfil this requirement of young workers so I believe that ACTU's national strategy not attractive for the worker.
