Determine the possible value (s) for the four different quantum numbers for electrons in a 2p orbital. *Please include a picture of work.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The values of all 4 Quantum numbers for 2P electrons are as following:

1. n=2

2. l=1

3. ml= −1,0,+1

4. ms= −1/2 or +1/2

n is principle quantum number which specifies the energy of electron as well as the size of the orbital.

l denotes the shape of an orbital related to a particular principle quantum number. it's value goes from 0 to n-1.

ml is magnetic quantum number which divides the subshell into individual orbitals that keep the electrons; there are 2l+1 orbitals in each subshell.

The last one ms is spin quantum number which specifies the orientation of the spin axis of an electron.
