Find the missing values in the tabeel below using Charle's Law. The volume units must agree, and all the temperatures must be in Kelvin. Show all work.
V1 T1 V2 Ts
a) 755mL 435 degrees Celsius 1.15 pints ?
b) ? 344 K 353 in^3 -13 degrees Fehrenheit
As per Charles law,
V1/T1 = V2/T2
a) V1 = 755ml
T1 = 435°C
V2 = 1.15pints
Now, 1 pint(liquid) = 473.18ml
So, 1.15pints = 1.15*473.18ml = 544.16ml
T2 = ?
So, using Charles law
V1/T1 = V2/T2
Keeping the values,
755ml/435°C = 544.16ml/T2
T2 = 544.16ml*435°C / 755ml = 313.5°C
Temperature in Kelvin,
313.5°C = 313.5 + 273.15K = 586.7K
(b) V1 = ?
T1 = 344K
V2 = 353in3
T2 = -13°F
Now to convert Fahrenheit to Kelvin, we must use the formula,
Tk = (Tf + 459.67) * 5/9
= (-13 + 459.67) * 5/9
= 446.67*5/9
= 248.15K
Now, keeping the values
V1/344K = 353in^3 / 248.15K
V1 = 353in^3 * 344K / 248.15K
= 489.35in^3
V1 = 489.35in^3
