To explain and set the tone for the interview following questions can be asked first:-
"We see people from a whole range of countries in our clinic. Every country and every culture has its own traditions and customs. You only really notice this if you leave your own country and go to live abroad. The people look different, they speak a different language, behave and express themselves differently. You sometimes feel as if no-one understands you. Have you ever felt like this?
After developing the tone of the interview and letting the interviewee know that they are not being judged on their ethnic background and the whole process is to just gather more information and knowledge about their background and culture following questions can be asked:-
Do you belong to a group in your country that is different from other (ethnic) groups?
How important is belonging to this group to you?
What do you feel is the most important thing about your culture? [For example: eating customs, respect, family, holidays, honour]
How do you think your culture differs from our customs and opinions?Is that important to you?
