3. Identify the most likely type of relationship (from our list of 5 relationships in Sec 8.2) between each of the following pairs of variables.
Population of rabbits vs inflation rate
Increase in pay vs job performance
Coffee consumption vs insomnia
Score on Physics Test vs score on Data Test
Number of scholarships received vs number of offers upon graduation
1. Population of rabbits vs inflation rate
There is no relationship between the two variables. The change in one variable has no effect on the other variable. Therefore, they are independent of each other.
2. Increase in pay vs job performance
There is positive linear correlation between the 2 variables. If there is increase in one variable the other variable also tends to go up. If there is increase on job performance then the there will be increase in pay. Same happend for the negative side as well.
3. Coffee consumption vs insomnia
There is negative linear correlation between the 2 variables. If there is increase in one variable then other variable tends to go down. If there is increase in consumption coffee then the hours of sleep time decreases. If someone consumes more coffee then they sleep less.
4. Score on Physics Test vs score on Data Test
There is no linear correlation between the 2 variables. The change in one variable has no effect on the other variable everytime. Someones knowledge in physiscs is not same as someones knowledge in data test.
5. Number of scholarships received vs number of offers upon graduation
There is positive linear correlation between the 2 variables. If there is increase in one variable then other variable also tends to go up. If a student was offer a large number of scholarships then he will also be offered after upon graduations.
