Which of the following is typically the strongest and has the highest melting point?

Select the correct answer below:

ionic solids

metallic solids

covalent network solids

molecular solids

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ionic bonds are strong, so it takes a lot of energy to break them. This property gives ionic solids high melting and boiling points. For example, sodium chloride melts at 800°C. The sodium and chloride ions that make up sodium chloride have charges of 1+ and 1-, respectively.

They are lattices composed of oppositely charged ions. Ionic solids tend to have high melting points ("high" generally being higher than metallic but lower than covalent). Because the electrons in ionic solids are localized (in the ions) these solids tend to be stiff and brittle like covalent solids.

network solid has the highest melting point. The reason being that all of the atoms in this type of solid are covalently bonded to one another so the covalent bonds must be broken throughout the substance. These covalent bonds holding the solid together are stronger than the ionic bonds
