The first ionization energies of the elements __________ as you go from left to right across a period of the periodic table, and __________ as you go from the bottom to the top of a group in the table.
The first ionization energy of elements increase as you go from left to right across a period because of inrease of atomic number - nuclear charge increase but elecltrons enter into same shell and due to this size of atom decrease from left to right successively ,that is why first ionization energy increase because of stronger nuclear charge.
And it is also increase when we go from bottom to top because as we go from bottom to top number of shell decrease and due to this outer shell electron attract towards nucleus. That is why for removing electron require more ionization energy.
So in both of given cases ionization energy increase.
