Cone. H2SO4 is 98 % H2SO4 by mass has d = 1.84 g cm-3. Volume of acid required to make one litre of 0.1 M H2SO4 is __________.

(a) 5.55 mL

(b) 10 mL

(c) 20 mL

(d) 30 mL

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer : a) 5.55 ml

Explanation :

Given :

Conc. 98% H2SO4 by mass

Density (d) = 1.84 gm/cc

Step 1 :

Calculation of molality of H2SO4

Molality (m) = no.of moles of solute / Kg of solvent

m = 98 ×10× 1.84 / 98

    = 18.4 M

Step 2 :

Calculation of required volume of H2SO4

By using concentration and volume relationship

i.e   MV = constant

Therefore,

        M1V1 = M2V2

  18.4 × V1 = 0.1 × 1000

              V1 = 5.55 ml

Thus, Volume of acid required to make one litre of 0.1 M H2SO4 is 5.55 ml.

a) 5.55 ml
