Expert Solution

  • Following are the resources that prisons can provide for the better quality of life: (a) mentally ill inmates: They can be assessed, treated and referred accordingly. They can be provided with group interventions for improving behavioural patterns.Individualistic approach may be applied for severity of disorder. (b)Pregnant inmates: There has to be healthcare policies by the government for pregnant inmates as well as for elderly, chronic diseased patients.Regular checkups and treatment should be provided as it is evident that inmates are neglected in prisons.A hospital set up , especially for prisoners may be made for immediate response.Additionally, adequate nutrition , prenatal care, miscarriage registrations etc should be strictly recorded and provided. (c) elderly inmates: Elderly inmates might have a substantial need for regular checkups , hospice setups for critically ill patients, terminal illness support etc .Strict regulations should be set up for managing elders in a prison unit. (d) chronic/ infectious inmates: They may be quarantined in an entirely separate units so to avoid spread of the disease.
  • It is important to note that the main cause of violence in prison units are gang rivalries, disputes, overcrowding etc.Authorities may prevent these violent attacks by doing potential violence risk assessments, developing protocols for violence control, training correctional officers to handle such situations proactively, training and group psychological interventions for inmates to manage their anger and aggression.

Good Luck!
