In layman language, getting things done in accurate & simplified manner by reducing variation is called Six Sigma.

Six Sigma principles are based upon DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, and Control)methodology in which improvements are made to the existing process by focusing more upon reducing variation.

Business Definition: It is a process driven methodology that drives breakthrough improvement by reducing variation and waste in process, hence creating value to the customer.

  • Six Sigma certification is a process of verification of an individual's command of the Six Sigma methods and techniques using a "Belt"classification. The belt aptitude system ("Black Belt," "Green Belt," etc.) reflects the positions these individuals would occupy within an organizational infrastructure, their aptitude in applying Six Sigma methodology, and their specific job roles.

In lean Six Sigma

White Belt: Can work on local problem-solving teams that support overall projects, but may not be part of a Six Sigma project team. Understands basic Six Sigma concepts from an awareness perspective.

Yellow Belt: Participates as a project team member. Reviews process improvements that support the project.

Green Belt: Assists with data collection and analysis for Black Belt projects. Leads Green Belt projects or teams.

Black Belt: Leads problem-solving projects. Trains and coaches project teams.

Master Black Belt: Trains and coaches Black Belts and Green Belts. Functions more at the Six Sigma program level by developing key metrics and the strategic direction. Acts as an organization’s Six Sigma technologist and internal consultant.
