Discuss briefly the sites of action of some of the pancreatic hormones and the biological processes they have a role in?
Some of the pancreatic hormones ,their sites of action and the biological processes they are involved in?
Insulin
Sites of action: liver, muscle cells
Biological function: glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, protein synthesis, glycogenesis
Glucagon
Site of action: adipocytes
Biological function: lipolysis
Somatostatin
Site of action: liver cells
Biological function: Inhibits the synthesis of insulin and glucagon.
Pancreatic polypeptide:
Site of action: intestinal cells
Biological function: Increase the contraction of smooth muscles; High concentration synthesized during pregnancy for facilitating easy delivery of child.
Some of the pancreatic hormones like insulin, glucagon, somatostatin, pancreatic polypeptide have roles in gluconeogenesis, protein synthesis, lipolysis, hormonal regulation, muscle contractions and have target sites appropriately
