1) Explain why atoms that are larger in size have lower ionization energies than smaller atoms ?

2) Suggest an element that would form the follwoing types of bonds with chlorine atom(element 17). If a particular type of bond is not possible for chlorine, state not possible and explain why.

A) Polar Covelant bond b) Ionic Bond c) non-polar covalent bond d) metalic bond

E) in the polar convaletn bond which atom, the chlorine or the element you suggested, would have the partial positive charge and why ?

Solutions

Expert Solution

1) Explain why atoms that are larger in size have lower ionization energies than smaller atoms ?

since they are larger in size, they are far away from the nucleus which are positively charged, therefore the energy required to strip an electorn is less

2) Suggest an element that would form the follwoing types of bonds with chlorine atom(element 17). If a particular type of bond is not possible for chlorine, state not possible and explain why.

a) polar covalent --> PCl3

b) ionic bond --> NaCl

c) nonpolar --> PCl5

d) metallic --> not possible

E)

the partial possitive charge is contained in the P atom, since Cl are pretty electornegatives

Explain each of the following observations. Explanations such as “Ca is larger than Mg because atoms get larger as you down a column of the periodic table” are not acceptable; you must tell me why this trend occurs. a) The atomic radius of Ca is larger than the atomic radius of Mg. b) The atomic radius of K is larger than the atomic radius of Ca. c) The ionic radius of S2– is larger than the ionic radius of Cl–...

Ionization energy is an inconsistent trend. For instance, the ionization energy of oxygen is lower than that of nitrogen and the ionization energy gallium is less than that for zinc. Suggest reasons this occurs and indicate other regions on the periodic table that this may occur.

Two resistors have resistances R(smaller) and R(larger), where R(smaller) < R(larger). When the resistors are connected in series to a 12.0-V battery, the current from the battery is 1.43 A. When the resistors are connected in parallel to the battery, the total current from the battery is 9.95 A. Determine the two resistances.
