Blood groups are determined by the types of proteins displayed on the surface of red blood cells. Alleles for these blood types are codominant. Blood type AB individuals display both the A protein and the B protein on their blood cells and will not produce antibodies against either A or B proteins. Blood type OO individuals do not make or display any proteins on their red blood cells.

A woman with blood type A marries a man with blood type B.

a) What are the possible genotypes of each parent?

b) What are the possible blood types of the offspring that can be produced by these parents? (attempt all possible crosses)

c) Which genotypes are not possible in the offspring?

d) Could these parents have a child with blood type O? Show the Punnett square on which you based your answer.

e) What antibodies does the man with type B produce?

f) Which blood type is considered to be the universal recipient? Explain your answer.

g) Which blood type is considered to be the universal donor? Explain your answer.

Solutions

Expert Solution

f. The AB blood type is considered to be the universal recipient.because they have no antibodies to A, B or Rh in their blood and can receive red blood cells from a donor of any blood type.

g. People with type O- blood are called universal donors because their donated red blood cells have no A, B or Rh antigens and can therefore this blood group is very safe to given people of any blood group.

Your blood belongs to one of four genetically determined types: O, A, B, or AB. A bulletin issued by a large blood bank claims that these four blood types are distributed in the U.S. population according to the following proportions: 0.44 are type O, 0.41 are type A, 0.10 are type B, and 0.05 are type AB. Let’s treat this claim as a null hypothesis to be test with a random sample of 100 students from a large university. The...

The cell membranes of mammalian red blood cells are permeable to urea. If red blood cells are dropped into a solution of urea that is identical in osmotic pressure (isosmotic) to the cytoplasm of the cells, although the cells do not swell and burst as quickly as when they are dropped simply into pure water, they eventually swell and burst. Explain. Also discuss how you would design a solution into which red cells could be placed without ever swelling. (Hint:...

Please select the statements that characterize the inheritance of the ABO blood groups. ABO blood groups are determined by the inheritance of a blood group allele from each parent. ABO blood groups are determined by 4 different alleles. Inheritance of ABO blood groups illustrate both dominance and codominance. ABO blood group inheritance is sex-linked. The alleles that determine the ABO blood groups encode the anti-A or anti-B antibodies.

A) The resistivity of blood is related to its hematocrit, the volume fraction of red blood cells in the blood. A commonly used equation relating the hematocrit h to the blood resistivity ρ (in Ω⋅m) is ρ=1.32/(1−h)−0.79. In one experiment, blood filled a graduated cylinder with an inner diameter of 0.90 cm. The resistance of the blood between the 1.0 cm and 2.0 cm marks of the cylinder was measured to be 246 Ω. What was the hematocrit for this...
