Hydrogen cyanide, HCN, is a poisonous gas. The lethal dose is approximately 300. mg HCN per kilogram of air when inhaled. The density of air at 26 ∘C is 0.00118 g/cm3.HCN forms when synthetic fibers containing Orlon® or Acrilan® burn. Acrilan® has an empirical formula of CH2CHCN, so HCN is 50.9% of the formula by mass. A rug in the laboratory measures 12.0× 15.0 ft and contains 30.0 oz of Acrilan® fibers per square yard of carpet. If the rug burns, what mass of HCN will be generated in the room? Assume that the yield of HCN from the fibers is 20.0%and that the carpet is 38.0 % consumed.
A rug in the laboratory measures 12.0× 15.0 ft and contains 30.0 oz of Acrilan® fibers per square yard of carpet.
12 x 15 = 180 sq ft this is 20 sq yard
if 30 Oz of Acrilan is present /sq yard in 20 sq yard we have 30 x 20 = 600 Oz of Acrilan this is 17009 g of Acrilan
50.9% of this is HCN so HCN is 17009 x 0.509 = 8657.6 g mass
As the carpet burns 38 % is consumed and yield of HCN from the burnt fiber is 20% SO actual HCN produced is
8657.6 x 0.38 x 0.20 = 658 g of HCN is generated in the room
According to the question
We know that
Areaof the carpet =12 ft *13ft = 156ft^2
Amount of carpet consumed = 156sq.ft * 44% = 68.64 sq.ft
(1 yard = 9 sq. ft)
So,
9 sq.ft contains 30oz orlon.
Amount of orlon in 68.64sq.ft = 30 oz *68.64sq.ft/9sq.ft =228.8oz
Then,
Yield of HCN = 228.8*20% =45.76 oz
Mass of HCN generated = 45.7oz
