The lethal dose for caffeine according to the FDA is about 200 mg of caffeine per kilogram body mass for a human. If one serving of a Monster Energy Drink weighs 240 g and contains 86 mg of caffeine, how many servings can a 145 lb student consume before it could potentially be fatal?
Sucralose is an artificial sweetener found in many diet foods. Find the empirical formula if it is 26.748% Cl, 4.816% H, 36.247% C, and 32.1889 % O.
Dosage limit = 200 mg per kg body weight
Mass of student = 145 lb = 65.77 kg
So,
Maximum limit of caffeine for this student = 65.77*200 = 13154 mg
Mass of caffeine per serving = 86 mg
Number of servings possible = 13154/86 = 152.95 = 153 servings.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Assume 100 g of the sucralose is present.
Moles of Cl present = Mass/MW = 27.748/35.5 = 0.782
Moles of H present = 4.816/1 = 4.816 moles
Moles of C present = 36.247/12 = 3.021 moles
Moles of O present = 32.1889/16 = 2.011 moles
Least number of moles are of Cl.
SO we divide other quantities by this number.
So, the empirical formula is: C3.021/0.782H4.816/0.782O2.011/0.782Cl0.782/0.782 = C3.86H6.16O2.57Cl
Hope this helps !
