Some common features of Clostridium

  • Clostridium is a bacterium that causes a toxin-mediated infection, which means that both the toxin and the bacteria may cause illness.
  • Organisms of this genus are anaerobic sporeforming gram-positive rods. They are motile, fermentative, and catalase negative.
  • The organisms concerned are widespread and are found in the intestines of animals and humans and in the soil, where they can both survive and multiply.
  • Their ability to form spores ensures survival under adverse conditions for long periods.
