1. The knowledge on the metabolism of parasites gives important insights about the control strategy as studying the metabolism tells us about the reactants, intermediates, and products formed. Upon studying these compounds we can know about the task or activity associated with the compounds and this can be an important part of knowing about the potential inhibitors which can be used to disintegrate the metabolism ultimately killing the parasite.
2. The protozoa contain a single mitochondrion at all developmental stages of which the contribution to the overall adenosine triphosphate (ATP) generation. Glycolysis takes place via the Embden-Meyerhoff pathway of which the early enzymes are sequestered inside a sub-cellular organelle: the glycosome.
3. Anaerobic energy metabolism is mostly found in protozoan which is in commensal and parasite species, such as digestive tract symbionts and pathogens in general, also present in a few free-living species adapted to anoxic or hypoxic habitats. Energy metabolism pathways in extant obligate or facultative anaerobes are varied and anaerobically functioning mitochondria or mitochondrion related organelles seem to be ubiquitous in such organisms. In fact, It has been recently suggested that the endosymbiosis which gave origin to mitochondria in the eukaryote ancestor, occurred as early as the nucleus acquisition and that organelles such as hydrogenosomes and mitosomes are degenerate forms of mitochondria which evolved independently in different eukaryotic lineages.
