Explain how cobalamin can prevent allergies and toxins.
Cobalamins are a group of vitamins. There are four types of cobalamins namely methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin, hydroxycobalamin and cyanocobalamin. Now, they work together in prevention of allergies and toxins. Myelin sheath is a structure which protects the nerve from free radical damage. Under low conditions of cobalamin, methylmalonyl CoA levels are elevated which results in destabilization of myelin sheath. They further prevent normal fatty acid synthesis. So, the abnormal fatty acid produced will be incorporated into the myelin sheath which will result in its destabilization and the nerves will be prone to damage from toxins and free radicals. Cobalamin prevents this by proper synthesis of myelin sheath.
Cobalamin also prevents allergies by lowering the serum IgE and pulmonary histamine concentrations. The production of interleukin 2 and 4 are also significantly lowered. It further also prevents cellular phosphorylation of tyrosine by inducing antibody stimulation. It helps in increasing the function of T cells, and removes malfunctioning of immune systems to prevent allergies.
